Background:Hello, my name is Kathy Oliveto. I went to Gonaives Haiti in the summer of 2001 for 2 weeks as part of a church outreach program. Since that time I have felt compelled to share what I experienced. The overwhelming poverty in Haiti is incomprehensible. The children are literally starving to death. No human being, especially a child, should ever be go to bed hungry nor should they be forced to sleep on the bare ground. The water is infected and discolored, for which they must drink and bathe. Most of the children I met were malnourished causing discoloration of their skin and hair. The disease and starvation has stunted their growth to a point where a 15 year old child had the appearance of a 7 year old. The average family lives in a shack constructed of cardboard, tin, and wood. There is no running water or sewage. The shacks are infested with rats, mice and poisonous insects. Lack of medical care (vaccinations, insulin and antibiotics) has significantly reduced the average life expectancy. Children and adults, with open wounds and diseases, are turned away due to a lack of medical supplies. No human being in any society should be forced to live in these type of conditions. I have personally committed myself to helping these suffering families of Gonaives. My life can never be the same after seeing this unnecessary suffering. Death by famine or war is all the same. Let us not close our eyes and ears to the suffering of our sisters and brothers in Haiti. Executive BoardIn God's Hands, Inc.
